“Pickles” still bringing smiles to SUN readers

Cartoonist Brian Crane continues to prove that humor, like love, only gets better with age. His long-running comic strip “Pickles,” which joined the Southern Utah News lineup in 2022, remains a reader favorite for its mix of warmth, wit and the small joys of daily life.

Created from Crane’s home studio in Sparks, Nevada, “Pickles” follows Earl and Opal Pickles, a retired couple who find humor in the ordinary - from misplaced glasses to stubborn pets and the quirks of growing older together. Inspired by Crane’s in-laws, the strip has been syndicated since 1990 and appears in more than 1,000 newspapers worldwide. It earned Crane the National Cartoonists Society’s Best Comic Strip Award (2001) and the Reuben Award for Cartoonist of the Year (2013).
