Petroglyphs vandalized near Buckskin Gulch / Wire Pass

According to a statement from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, two individuals were captured on camera defacing petroglyphs near Buckskin Gulch on November 23, 2024. The statement reads, “The Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Land Management are investigating a report of vandalism at a cultural site near the confluence of Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch in Kane County.”

Buckskin Gulch, a federally protected cultural site, holds more than 10 miles of carved petroglyphs featuring bighorn sheep, snakes, and other symbols, all within the boundaries of the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness.

Investigators are currently looking for the persons pictured in the attached photos for questioning.” The authorities ask that anyone recognizing these individuals or their vehicle contact the Kane County Sheriff’s Office directly at 435-644-2668. KSL-TV in Salt Lake City reports that the Bureau of Land Management is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to a “successful prosecution” of the case.
