First celebrated in Utah in 1875, Old Folks Day disappeared for decades before Kanab City proudly brought it back last year. Its revival was such a success that the tradition continues again this year on October 1. The community-wide celebration, which honors the contributions of our older residents, promises another day filled with fun, connection and good old-fashioned entertainment.
This year’s festivities will include a variety of free activities, from games to social gatherings. Just like last year, seniors will pick up their Old Folks Day ribbons at any of the scheduled activities on October 1. Then, wearing their ribbon, they can visit participating businesses and organizations throughout the day to receive free prizes, adding even more excitement to the celebration. We are thrilled to welcome participating organizations from Fredonia this year, expanding the celebration across the border and making Old Folks Day an even greater regional tradition.
In addition, this year, the Kane County Active Living Center will host an Old-Fashioned Country Hoedown in the Kanab Center Ballroom to close out the day. Attendees will enjoy a hearty country dinner, live music, cowboy poetry and dancing, concluding with the Grande Marche. The Hoedown is free for those 60 and older, with a suggested $10 donation for those under 60. Pre-registration for the Hoedown is required to ensure there’s a spot and plenty of food for everyone!
While the schedule is packed with fun, the heart of Old Folks Day remains the same: celebrating and honoring the senior members of our community. Their wisdom, stories and years of dedication have shaped Kanab into the place we know and love today. Old Folks Day is just a small way of showing gratitude for all they’ve given.
Activities are open to the whole family, so come join in the festivities. Whether you’re young or young at heart, Old Folks Day is a chance to connect, remember and celebrate together. While the schedule for the day is still being finalized, please visit KanabMuseum.org/OFD for more information on how to join in the fun!
