FREDONIA, Ariz. — Stage 2 fire restrictions will take effect across the North Kaibab Ranger District at 6 a.m., June 18, as fire danÂger continues to increase on the Kaibab Plateau.

The restrictions, anÂnounced by the Kaibab National Forest, prohibit campfires, charcoal fires, wood stove fires and other open flames on National Forest lands within the district. Unlike Stage 1 reÂstrictions, Stage 2 restricÂtions prohibit campfires even in developed campÂgrounds and recreation sites.
Additional restrictions apply to activities that could generate sparks, inÂcluding certain equipment use, welding and cutting metal.
The restrictions apply across the North Kaibab Ranger District, including National Forest lands surÂrounding Jacob Lake, the Kaibab Plateau and areas leading south toward the North Rim. The district is a popular destination for campers, hunters, hikers and travelers heading to Grand Canyon National Park during the summer recreation season.
The district had been under Stage 1 restrictions since June 11. Forest offiÂcials said worsening condiÂtions, dry fuels and extreme fire danger prompted the move to Stage 2.
The change comes as firefighters continue to respond to several large wildfires across northern Arizona, including the Rock Canyon Fire south of U.S. Highway 89. Officials conÂtinue to urge residents and visitors to use caution and avoid activities that could spark a wildfire.
Visitors are encouraged to check the latest fire restrictions, closures and wildfire information before traveling, as conditions can change rapidly.
The Tusayan and WilÂliams ranger districts of the Kaibab National ForÂest remain under Stage 1 restrictions.
