Kane School District held its annual budget hearing on June 23, just prior to the Kane District Board of Education regular meeting. New District Business Administrator Lark Reynolds presented the proposed final budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026, and the proposed beginning budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2027. No members of the public were present, so no comments were taken. Reynolds announced that the certified tax rate would remain the same for the 2026 calendar year and not be increased. He was later sworn in by Kane County Clerk Chameill Lamb.

Kanab High School (KHS) Principal Trevor Stewart and Valley High School (VHS) Principal Don Heath presented the Title IX Athletic Report to the School Board. Federal Civil Rights Law Education Amendment Title IX prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities, including athletic programs, that receive federal financial assistance. Under Utah law 53G-6-1101, public schools must provide explicit documentation for each academic year on athletic opportunities, spending, participation rates and facility comparisons to ensure that local school boards can directly review and rectify any disparities between male and female athletic programs.
Both principals reported the schools’ participation rates for males and females were commensurate with the proportion of males and females enrolled, making those acceptable under the law. Both also reported that the spending rates for female participants were higher than those for male participants. They will be looking into this issue for the future. These reports are available on the school district’s Board documents page.
Superintendent Ben Dalton reported that Kanab Elementary School (KES) and Valley Elementary School (VES) were awarded $500 grants by Utah Community Builders to sponsor summer Read- A-Thon events. Utah Community Builders is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a program of the Salt Lake Chamber Foundation.
He also shared the KIDS COUNT data book, a national report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation. This report provides an annual snapshot of how children are faring, nationally and in every state, based on 16 indicators in four domains: economic well-being, education, health and family & community. The 2026 report shows how the status of children has changed, comparing data before the pandemic to the latest available figures, (2019 to 202). Utah ranked third of all states.
In other business, the board accepted the resignations of Megan Smith (VHS Teacher), Lyle Goulding (VHS Assistant Baseball Coach) and Tina Martin and Sara Wren as paraeducators.
The board ratified a two-year contract for Lark Reynolds as the new District Business Administrator. It authorized provisional employees Angie Hale (KMS Teacher) and Jenni Johnson (Big Water School Teacher) to move to career status. It approved the hiring, subject to a successful background check, of Cara Ott as a Lake Powell School teacher and Sladen Ott as a one-year teacher. Congratulations to all.
