MOUNT CARMEL — Artists and visitors from across the country gathered this week at the historic Maynard Dixon Summer Home & Studio for the opening of the “Heart of America” Plein Air exhibition, a showcase focused on western landscapes and outdoor painting.

Hosted by the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts in partnership with the Plein Air Painters of America, the exhibit features more than 100 paintings created by nearly 40 artists affiliated with the national organization.

The exhibition opened May 15 and is scheduled to remain on display through July 6 at the Mount Carmel property along U.S. 89 east of Zion National Park.
According to organizers, participating artists created paintings in and around southern Utah during the gathering, continuing the plein air tradition of painting outdoors and on location.
The opening weekend also included a “wet paint” sale featuring newly completed works.
“We are honored to host these accomplished artists in Southern Utah,” said Susan Bingham of the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts. “The Plein Air Painters of America are excited to be here and to paint the beauty of this region.”
Bingham said workshop participants connected to the event have had an opportunity to learn from professional artists.
“The show and sale of works will only be available until July 6, and paintings are selling fast, so stop by soon,” she said.
Opening events drew artists, local residents and visitors to the property for gallery tours and a reception featuring food and music.
“The catering was done through my personal business, Kiki Dee’s Catering,” said Kourtney Millard. “I think beautiful art and beautiful food go hand in hand. Kane County has such a gem in the Maynard Dixon, and I was happy to be part of the event.”
