Kane County economic development director Kelly Stowell recognized by the state

The Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity recently recognized Kane County Economic Development Director Kelly Stowell for his nearly two decades of work helping guide economic development, outdoor recreation and the local film industry.

Stowell, who has served as the county’s economic development and Center for Education, Business and the Arts (CEBA) director since 2008, was featured in the agency’s newsletter highlighting leaders from around the state. The recognition cited his role in fostering partnerships, supporting recreation projects and promoting Kane County’s ties to the film industry.

For Stowell, the recognition reflects the work of many organizations rather than any one individual.

“The accomplishment I’m most proud of over the past 18 years has been helping build a culture of collaboration in Kane County,” Stowell said. “We’ve brought together local governments, state and federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, businesses and community members to pursue opportunities that no single organization could accomplish on its own.”

He said those partnerships have helped secure millions of dollars in grant funding for recreation and trail projects, infrastructure improvements and community development while preserving the county’s rural character.

Stowell also pointed to the area’s continued role as “Little Hollywood,” saying film productions continue to bring visitors and spending into the local economy. Among the projects he remembers most are the HBO series Westworld and Kevin Costner’s Horizon.

Looking ahead, Stowell said the county’s focus remains on creating more year-round economic opportunities while maintaining the quality of life that attracts residents and visitors.

“Our goal is to create good-paying jobs, encourage private investment and ensure future generations can continue to live, work and thrive in Kane County,” he said.

The Governor’s Office newsletter noted that Stowell’s work has emphasized collaboration among local, state and federal partners while helping diversify the county’s economy through recreation, tourism and support for local businesses.
