Rutan aircraft return to Kanab for annual fly-in
A familiar collection of distinctive aircraft returned to Kanab over Labor Day weekend as pilots and aviation enthusiasts gathered for the 2026 Rutan Fly- In and Turner Classic at Kanab Municipal Airport.

The annual gathering, held September 4-6, drew 117 registered attendees and 56 registered aircraft, according to the Canard Owners and Builders Association. Twenty-eight aircraft were registered for the Turner Classic, a timed flying event that has become one of the weekend’s traditions.
The fly-in brings together owners, builders and enthusiasts of canard aircraft, including the VariEze and Long-EZ designs associated with pioneering aircraft designer Burt Rutan. Unlike conventional airplanes, many of the designs feature a smaller lifting surface, or canard, ahead of the main wing.
Kanab has hosted the gathering for more than 30 years, with organizers citing the area’s scenery, relaxed atmosphere and community support as reasons participants return each Labor Day weekend.
This year’s activities included the City of Kanab’s Burger Burn, the Turner Classic, airport gatherings and a closing banquet. Participants also attended a Sunday screening of Beyond Blue Sky: The Untold Story of the First Private Astronauts at the Redstone Theater, with director Kevin Curran.
Organizers also highlighted improvements at Kanab Municipal Airport during 2026, including additional space and a new fuel farm. The group described the city as a longtime supporter of the event and said Kanab itself has become an important part of the fly-in’s appeal.
