Helping older adults age well in Kane County

Many older adults in Kane County have lived here their whole lives, some in the same home. More recent arrivals have come to work for local businesses or return home to retire. According to the 2020 Census, between 2010 and 2020, Kane County experienced a 41.6 percent increase in its 65+ population. Because we are living longer, Kane County could struggle to care for its growing number of aging residents if we don’t prepare.

The Kane County Council on Aging (KCCOA) understands the importance of social engagement and active living as we get older. Having an active social life helps prevent depression and helps to keep our minds sharp. We can gain new knowledge and skills, while also having fun. Making senior friends and staying socially active is quite easy if you’re willing to venture out and try new things.

The KCCOA, along with Jerica Bauer, Director of the Kane County Active Living Centers, is working to evaluate the current and future needs of Kane County’s older residents and develop additional programs for the centers. We need creative solutions to help individuals remain in their homes and engaged in their communities.

The KCCOA is seeking individuals to serve on our volunteer board. We realize that in our community there are many organizations engaged in important work that also need volunteers. We would love to have you join us. Our board is made up of residents of Kane County with the majority being 60 + years old. Board members commit to serve a four-year term, to attend quarterly meetings and to accept a committee assignment when possible.

The mission of the KCCOA is to evaluate the needs of Kane County’s senior population, to serve as a spokes group for senior needs and to enlist the skills and talents of older adults, other volunteer residents and local organizations to meet those needs.

Anyone interested in helping us advocate for senior needs please contact KCCOA Chair Cindy Turnquist at cindyturnquist@gmail.com or Active Living Center Director Jerica Bauer at jbauer@kane.utah.gov.
