Note: Fire information is current as of publication; please check online and/or government notification services for real-time information on active fires.

Firefighting efforts around the Grand Canyon made progress over the course of the first half of the week of July 20, aided by helpful weather conditions

As of July 23, the fire had burned 16,765 acres and reached 26 percent containment. According to the Dragon Bravo Incident Management Team, the rain and high humidity gave firefighters time to more firmly establish containment lines and protect high priority structures and resources along the North Rim. Per the July 22 daily report, “Firefighters remain focused on adding containment line and strengthening fireline before humidity lowers. In anticipation of the drier incoming weather and the potential of the fire front sending spot fires up to a half mile ahead of the fire, crews are proactively conducting strategic backfiring operations along Forest Road 610 to act as a containment feature. Structure protection groups continue preparation work on values at risk such as the Kaibab Lodge, historical landmarks, and the Roaring Springs Aquifer. Crews are installing sprinkler systems and conducting aerial water drops to support these efforts. Additional work took place northwest of the fire to complete prep work on Forest roads 223 and 270.”
