On September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk, conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Authorities say a single rifle shot fired from a rooftop struck him in the neck during his “American Comeback Tour” event.

Police arrested 22-year-old Tyler James Robinson, of Washington, Utah, about 33 hours after the attack. He was taken into custody without incident. Initially held without bail at the Utah County Jail under special housing and 24-hour supervision, his case has since moved forward in the courts.
Prosecutors have now formally charged Robinson with seven counts, including aggravated murder; felony discharge of a firearm; two counts of obstruction of justice; two counts of witness tampering; and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child. They allege he acted with political motive, targeted Kirk’s speech, and attempted to cover up the crime.
The state is seeking the death penalty. In his first court appearance on September 16, Robinson appeared virtually, wore what appeared to be a suicide-prevention smock, and responded only to basic questions. A protective order has also been issued to bar him from contacting Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow.
Evidence disclosed includes alleged text messages in which Robinson privately said, “I had enough of his hatred” when explaining why he carried out the killing; surveillance footage placing him on campus visibly armed; DNA matching on the trigger of the rifle seized; and messages allegedly sent to his roommate/partner about the shooting plan.
Governor Spencer Cox and other state officials have described the killing as a political assassination, citing the manner of the act, its motivations, and its implications for public safety and free speech. The case continues to draw national attention as both sides prepare for what is expected to be a lengthy trial.
