Breigh Ulibarri, of Kanab’s Shabby Chic Salon, was attending a hair show in Las Vegas when she spotted a familiar face: Lisa, an Instagram stylist Breigh had been following for some time. Little did the somewhat awestruck Breigh know, as she approached to introduce herself, Lisa was there scouting a team to travel to the New York Fashion Week show. Breigh had just filled out an application, and it turns out her twinkling eye and engaging smile left an impression: Breigh was invited to participate as a team member in New York.
She put together a fundraiser to help with expenses, which made such an impression on her. She was sincerely touched that people were excited to help her realize her dream. She was on her way for an adventure of a lifetime.
Her family was thrilled for her but had concerns about her traveling alone. “My Grandma encouraged me to ask Dalton, [Breigh’s husband], to go with me.” She went on to say, “We had three days to be tourists.”
There were about 30 members in her team with a total participating group of approximately 300. Breigh was the only representative from Utah and represented Shabby Chic well. They were given assignments from the designers for hair and makeup. If the ‘look’ wasn’t what they were looking for we had to start over, then do it until it was right. She nailed her assigned tasks. There was a rather large and unforeseen problem when all the hair stylists began to blow dry their models’ hair, oops, there went the breakers, adding a bit of stress.
“We had to fulfill the requirements of the designer. They wanted specific looks,” she explained. “One was spiky, inspired by the 90’s, one was slick, another almost looked like they had been electrocuted. Very big hair, kind of like the higher the hair the closer to Jesus’ vibe. Then there was the fairy tale wedding bun.” She went on to explain, “We had to show our product, hot tools knowledge and trained on extensions. I loved it.”
On their own the couple attended a Brooklyn Basketball game and a quick trip to the beach at Staton Island. They also were able to visit the 9-11 memorial, “It was a peaceful and almost sacred space.”
Breigh wanted to thank all her coworkers who supported her and even donated with haircuts or nails. “I felt so loved. I didn’t know most of the people who came in. They had seen it on Facebook or said their wives booked the appointment for them,” she shared. “I also want to thank my friends and family who have made this possible.” She was so pleased to have Dalton to share this with. “I wanted to go have dinner with the girls, he was so supportive, he just told me to go have fun.”
