Back When: The Doc Aiken Story

KANAB — The Kanab City Heritage and Historic Preservation Board invites the public to attend the next installment of the free “Back When” series, titled “Back When: The Doc Aiken Story,” on Monday, May 18, at 6:00 p.m. in the Kanab Center.

The “Back When” series highlights the people, stories and experiences that shaped life in Kanab and Kane County. This upcoming program will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. George Aiken, one of Kanab’s early doctors who became one of the community’s most beloved and influential citizens. The program will feature friends and family of Doctor Aiken sharing stories and memories of his life and service. Those attending will also be encouraged to share memories and humorous stories from their interactions with “Doc Aiken.”

Doctor Aiken moved to Kanab around 1930. At that time, medical care in Kane County looked very different than it does today. With no hospital or formal medical facilities, Dr. Aiken traveled throughout the county treating patients in their homes, often crossing long distances and difficult terrain. He would eventually construct and open Kane County’s first hospital by trading medical services for land, lumber and labor.

Dr. Aiken’s service extended far beyond medicine, as he also served the community as mayor, city councilman and state legislator. Even today, his commitment and contributions to the community can still be seen in many ways.

Because the story of one doctor is also the story of an entire community, all are invited to attend this free evening of local history, storytelling and remembrance.
