The temporary, 12- week part-time position pays $16 per hour. Apprentices will spend four weeks in three departments: Maintenance, Buildings and Utilities.

“This is an ideal opportunity for people who like to work with their hands and want a broad learning experience to trade skills in a safe, supportive environment,” said Jarad Brinkerhoff, director of canyon operations, Best Friends Animal Society.

Some of the skills apprentices will learn include:

  • Maintaining and repairing vehicles - from oil changes to engine and transmission work

  • Fencing repair and grounds upkeep

  • Assisting technicians on repair calls (to include plumbing, electrical, carpentry and HVAC.)

  • Assisting with new construction and remodeling projects (footers, pouring concrete, framing, insulation, drywall, painting and trim carpentry)

  • Fabrication work (welding, plasma cutting, CNC)

  • Finish wood carpentry

  • Maintaining the municipal water system (water testing, system operations)

  • Maintaining wastewater systems

  • Installing and maintaining electrical systems (includes electrical theory training)

Apprentices will be required to maintain safe, clean workspaces, tools and equipment. Treating Sanctuary colleagues and volunteers with kindness is a must, as is building trust through effective communication.

“Ultimately, our hope is that this program will produce graduates that acquire the skilled trades that will build a pipeline of future Best Friends employees,” Brinkerhoff said. “As the largest employer in Kane County, Best Friends offers a solid career path and excellent benefits, so this is a great way to start working with us.”
