According to the Navajo Police Department, three homes were destroyed on September 13 by a sudden tornado touching down in McCracken Mesa and Cahone Mesa areas, near Montezuma Creek. The report stated there were no injuries, but there was significant property damage as well as missing livestock and pets in the area.
The impacted families were given counseling and housing assistance by the Aneth Navajo Chapter, who reported the families were in good health and uninjured. The Utah Navajo Health System and the Montezuma Creek Elementary School also helped to shelter the families who lost their homes.
The storms also knocked out the Montezuma area power for a significant amount of time through the destruction of multiple power poles. Local authorities urge citizens to avoid the damaged areas, which may have unstable terrain or dangerous debris.
