Kane County Corrections Deputies Garret Spencer, Bert Reeve and Hunter Cram were given the Lifesaving Award at the recent meeting of the Utah Sheriffs Association, in recognition of their actions when an inmate at the Kane County Jail attempted suicide on January 18, 2024. The man had attempted to use a loop of cloth to hang himself from the mezzanine level of the facility, at which point one of the deputies held the man up to relieve choking pressure from his neck while the others respectively cut him down and retrieved medical supplies for the individual.

According to Sheriff Tracy Glover, the inmate was conscious and breathing again by the time medical personnel arrived on scene. Said Sheriff Glover, “All three deputies took decisive action quickly and calmly in an extremely intense situation to save the inmate’s life … the deputies’ actions demonstrate their courage and their commitment to their duty to protect and preserve life. We are honored to present Burt Reeve, Hunter Cram and Garrett Spencer the Utah Sheriffs Association Life Saving Medal.”
At the same conference, Sheriff Tracy Glover, who serves as the chair of the Sheriffs’ Association, was awarded the Lawman of the Year Award by the collective vote of the other county sheriffs in the association.
