Wednesday, February 21, was Family Math Night at Fredonia Elementary School, and it did not disappoint. Students and parents alike came out to participate in the fun math games that filled the gym. Mrs. Tamri’s fifth and sixth grade class greeted everyone as they came through the doors with a “Math Magic” game that, at the end, told you the day of the week you were born on. I learned I was born on a Sunday!

Kindergarten’s Miss Melissa and First Grade’s Miss Lumen had two games set up at their station called “Jungle Subtraction” and “Roller Coaster.” These games involved dice and multiplication. Next, Mrs. Crookston (second grade), along with her hubby, helped families play the “Place Value Ties” game. This game was played with a deck of cards to create the largest value.
Mr. Antonio (third grade) had a huge station set up with three games from the Philippians (where he is from). The first was “Tapatan.” This easy to learn, three-in-a-row twist on tic-tac-toe was enormously popular. The second was “Sungka,” where two players compete to capture the majority of the “shells” and lastly was “Damath.” This well-liked combination of checkers and math had families lining up to participate.
Mrs. Finicum (Fourth grade) had a splendid station set up with various card games. “War”, “Go Fish”, “Guess Your Number” and “I Spy” proved to be tried and true amongst one and all who stopped by. The fun night came to an end with dessert provided by Superintendent Dorene Mudrow.
As always, we want to thank the families who came out and supported Math Night, it was a fun time to rejuvenate the brain and refresh our numeracy skills. For more information about upcoming events please visit fredonia.org. Together we grow as a school and a community!
