Fire at Three Lakes extinguished quickly

KANE COUNTY — On July 23, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary experienced a fire on its adjoining Three Lakes property. Security guard Jordan Steed spotted smoke coming from west of the Sanctuary and reported it to Color Country Interagency, confirming the fire was located on Best Friends’ property.

Steed relayed the exact location to responding agencies and began removing fuel from the fire’s path. Sanctuary staff member Clint Brinkerhoff arrived shortly after, and the two engaged the fire directly using hand tools, cutting a solid fire line.

As Bureau of Land Management and state fire crews arrived, Steed and Brinkerhoff directed them to the fire’s location before disengaging as containment efforts began. Quick response kept this fire, named the Three Lakes Fire, from spreading.
