The Cowboys welcomed the Beaver Beavers (9-9) on Wednesday, January 31, for an important region game. The Cowboys managed the game well, but the struggling Beavers hung around to keep the Cowboys on their toes. Cowboys led after one 15-10, until the Beavers tied it up at halftime 24-24 with a strong second quarter. The Cowboys were able to break away in the second half, closing out the game with a 53-45 victory. Cash Mortensen continued his strong performance both offensively and defensively, leading the Cowboys with 19 points, while Trey Castagno added 11.
The Cowboys then travelled to the always rowdy Enterprise gym to face off against the #1 ranked team in 2A. The Cowboys were on a mission dominating the Wolves in the first half with a 35-19 lead. Photo by Jeremy Houston. boys lead, but Kanab’s 3-2 zone defense was stifling. Cowboys cruised to the critical region victory 59-47. Kyle Brown came up big with 16 points, with Mortensen and Maddix Baird both contributing 11 points.
There is a three-way tie atop the 2A standings with Kanab beating Enterprise two times, South Sevier beating Kanab two times, and Enterprise beating South Sevier both times. The last week of games will prove critical as each time fights for the higher rankings in the state playoffs. The Cowboys last home game will be against the Water Canyon Wildcats on Wednesday, February 7. Followed by the last game of the season at the Millard Eagles.
