Cowboys demolish Spartans in season opener

The Kanab High School football team opened up its season with an old school beat-down of the Emery Spartans. By the end of the first quarter the Cowboys were up 20 to 7. The two teams were able to punch in six apiece during the second quarter, bring­ing the half-time score to 26-13 for Kanab.

The Cowboy defen­sive squad shut out the Spartans’ offense in the third quarter, while the Cowboy offense tucked in an impressive 19 points to bring the score to 45-13 at the end of the quarter.

Things rounded out in the final quarter with Emery scoring seven and the Cow­boys were held score­less, wrapping up the final score of 45-20 in favor of the Cowboys. The win brings the Cowboys to 1-0 on the season and 0-0 in re­gion play.


Hayden Gubler rushed for two touch­downs while Ozzy Wil­liams hauled in two on the pass. Grady Ander­son, Degan Swapp and Latimer Glover each contributed a touch­down as well.

Brogun Virostko completed five of six passing attempts for a total of 80 yards, with Ozzy Williams hauling in two (27 yds), Kolton Blomquist with one (28 yds.), Latimer Glover with one (15 yds.) and Hayden Gubler with one (10 yds).


Hayden Gubler lead the team in rushing yards. The senior rushed for 72 yards on seven carries, Grady Anderson had 53 yards on two carries, Latimer Glover - 29 yards on two carries, Degan Swapp - 26 yards on five carries, Kolton Blomquist - 22 yards on two carries, Cam Cart­wright - 10 yards on one carry and Brogun Virsotko ran for seven yards on four carries.

Kolton Blomquist lead the team in tack­les with 12 solo and five assists, Ozzy Williams contributed seven solo and four assists, with Degan Swapp adding eight solo and two assists. Other defen­sive additions came from Grady Anderson (six solo, three as­sists), Hayden Gubler (five solo, four assists), Brayden Johnson (four solo, five assists), Lat­imer Glover (four solo, four assists), Walker Baird (four solo, three assists), Levi Stewart (four solo, two as­sists), Kaleb Warner (four solo, two assists), Kooper Swindlehurst (three solo, one as­sist), Deagan Allen (one solo, two assists), Kyan Lyman (one solo, one assist), with Cam Cartwright, Kanan Virostko contributing one solo apiece.


Brayden Johnson, Levi Stewart and De­gan Swapp each threw down one sack apiece, while Grady Anderson, Latimer Glover and Degan Swapp each hauled in one intercep­tion each.


The Cowboys will travel to Salina, Utah, this Friday (August 22) to take on the North Sevier Wolves in non-region play.
