Cowboys come up short against a tough San Juan team

Kanab played vs. San Juan, on Friday, August 30, 2024, the Cowboys lost a tough game against the San Juan Broncos last Friday night. The Broncos came out hot, scoring twice in the first quarter and holding the Cowboys scoreless.

Kanab had a slight uptick in the second quarter with a 14-yard TD pass from Brogun Virostko to Hayden Gubler, Freshman kicker, Ray Capson was then able to clinch the point after attempt, bringing the score to 14-7 in favor of the Broncos. The momentum quickly shifted back to the visiting team however, with the Broncos scoring three more times before the half.


The third quarter was all Broncos again as they added two more touchdowns while holding the Cowboys scoreless. The Cowboys tried to rally in the fourth quarter with a 15-yard TD run by Rider Allen, with a completed point after attempt by Capson, but came up short as the Broncos added another touchdown by the time all was said and done, bringing the final score to 14-49 for the Broncos.



Top offensive players for the Cowboys were Junior Brogun Virostko who passed for 75 yards and had a 52.6 percent completion rate, Junior Hayden Gubler who rushed for 70 yards, had 12 carries (averaging 5.8 yards/ carry) and scored one touchdown, and Senior Rider Allen who rushed for 39 yards during four carries (averaging 9.8 yards/ carry) and scored one touchdown.


Top defensive players for the Cowboys were Senior Kash Kabonic and Junior Kolten Blomquist, each contributing six tackles, with Senior Wyatt Orton contributing four. Passing Yards: Kanab 75, San Juan 214 Rushing Yards: Kanab 248, San Juan 261 Total Yards: Kanab 323, San Juan 475. Third Down Conversions: Kanab 3-11, San Juan 7-11 Turnovers: Kanab 4, San Juan 1 Fumbles: Kanab 1, San Juan 0.


The Cowboys travel to Fillmore, Utah, for their next gridiron matchup against the Millard Eagles. Good luck Cowboys!
