Best Friends Animal Society hosts candidate event
KANAB, Utah — Election time means opportunities to meet the candidates. Best Friends Animal Society hosted an event to meet the four Kane County commission candidates on Tuesday, September 22. In attendance were current commissioners in Seats A and B, Patty Kubeja and Celeste Meyeres, both running for reelection, as well as challengers Matt Fisher and Bo Folsom.

A standing room only crowd of close to 60 people filled the Mercantile at the Best Friends Roadhouse. Best Friends staffer, Pat Guerrero, asked the four candidates a series of questions related to why they’re running, the county’s role in providing municipal services to unincorporated areas of the county, the most pressing needs for infrastructure and capital projects, zoning, communication and more.
Some members of the audience submitted questions in writing, with the most common theme being the preliminary municipality Willow. The topic of Willow was one thing that all four candidates agreed on - all four are against the idea of a preliminary municipality, which is a special legal status which allows landowners and developers to create a new town in mostly uninhabited and unincorporated areas.
As a tax-exempt organization, Best Friends Animal Society does not endorse, support, or oppose any political candidate or political party. The evening’s event was conducted in a strictly non-partisan manner for educational purposes. All four candidates were asked the same questions and subject to the same time limits in their answers.
Best Friends’ purpose in hosting the event was to bring candidates for the Kane County Commission together in one place so that members of the community could have access to them, hear directly from them and get to know their positions.
The Q&A lasted about 75 minutes, then the candidates were available to meet individually with those in attendance for further conversation.
