Apple Valley lifts water conservation notice

APPLE VALLEY — A precautionary water conservation notice issued by the Town of Apple Valley has been lifted, with officials saying residents can return to the community’s regular drought conservation practices.

Mayor Mike Farrar told the Southern Utah News that the temporary conservation request was issued because of an issue involving one of the town’s two wells.
“It was a precautionary notification due to an issue we were having with one of our two wells,” Farrar said. “Yesterday I lifted the water conservation notice, and we reverted to our regular drought water conservation plan.”
The town had previously asked residents to significantly reduce water use while officials monitored the situation. Conservation measures included limiting outdoor watering and reducing nonessential water use.
According to Farrar, those temporary restrictions are no longer in effect.
Farrar said town officials were able to implement temporary measures to address the immediate concern but are continuing to pursue longer-term solutions.
“We came up with some temporary solutions for the emergency situation; however, we are still working with the state on long-term solutions and funding for those projects,” Farrar said.
Apple Valley, like many communities in southern Utah, relies heavily on groundwater to meet municipal water needs. Farrar said the town faces many of the same water challenges confronting communities across Utah, particularly those located in arid regions and dependent on limited water supplies.
The town’s regular drought conservation plan remains in place.
Farrar did not provide additional details regarding the issue affecting the town well, but indicated the situation no longer required the heightened conservation measures that had been requested earlier.
The temporary conservation notice prompted discussion among residents about local water supplies and groundwater resources. However, town officials now say the precautionary measures have ended and the community has returned to normal drought conservation practices.
