According to reports from Utah Highway Patrol (UHP), a driver and passenger were killed in a collision between their car, a semi-truck and a pickup truck on Highway 89 near Big Water on October 1.

At about 5 p.m. the car attempted to cross the highway westbound, pulling out in front of the semi. Indicators showed the semi braked heavily to avoid impact, but struck the car on the side, swiveling it into the northbound lane.
A pickup truck towing a boat was heading northbound and was unable to stop before colliding into the passenger side of the car. Per the UHP report, the semi driver was unharmed, the driver and four passengers of the pickup were taken to hospital and were later cleared with minor injuries. Both the driver and the passenger of the car - ages 28 and 29, from China - were pronounced dead on the scene.
The highway was closed for several hours during the investigation and only reopened later that evening.
