A little after 3 p.m., on Sunday, February 19, Kane County Dispatch received a call about a 50-year-old male who had slipped near the entrance to the sand caves while hiking with a group. His injuries consisted of a possible broken ankle and an injured elbow.

When emergency personnel arrived, the individual had been attended to by an off-duty police officer from northern Utah who was also visiting the caves.

It was determined that it could be dangerous for responders to try and pack the individual down the slick rock. Assistance was requested from the Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter located in St. George. When they arrived, they were able to attach the patient to a hoist and transport him to the ambulance which was waiting at the highway. He was then transported to Kane County Hospital for evaluation.
