Fredonia Elementary School (FES) was the place to be Thursday night to celebrate the upcoming start of the new school year. The gym was set up with tables, games and food along with several local information booths for parents and students. The night started off with Fredonia-Moccasin Unified School District (FMUSD) Superintendent Dorene Mudrow welcoming everyone and then the “Olympic games” began. First up, was the hula hoop toss where teams competed against each other to see who could toss the hoop over the person in front of them and get through their team line first.

Next up, the pyramid stack. Teams competed against each other to see who could get the red solo cup (that was placed at the button and in the middle of the pyramid) to the top with only one move per person.

Last, the basketball walk where teams placed a basketball between their knees and had to walk around cones and pass it to the next member in line. All teams were rewarded for their efforts with gold, silver and bronze medals. As the games ended many students went to meet their teacher and see their new classroom while the PTO provided hoagies sandwiches for dinner.

“Nothing Bundt Cakes” provided two amazing desserts to end the evening. This year FES students will be participating in “Books & Bunts, which is a program that celebrates accomplishments big and small in reading. Student s Pre-K through 6th grade will receive a free “bundtlet” (small bundt cake) each month that they read 400 plus minutes.

The Coconino County Arizona Health and Human Services also had a big information booth set up that provided information on their diaper assistance program, period pantry, which makes menstrual products accessible to low-income individuals across Coconino County and many other helpful programs. They also provided backpacks, notebooks, pencils, glue sticks and much more to parents, students and the school. FMUSD wants to give a huge shout out to everyone who worked so hard to make this back-to-school night a success. When schools, families, and community groups work together to support learning, students tend to do better in school, stay in school longer and like school more.
