Lady Cowboys on fire and pushing harder still

This past week was a busy travel week for the Kanab Volleyball team. On Tuesday we traveled up to South Sevier where we went five sets with them on their home court. Kanab took the first game 25-20. Kanab barely lost the next one at 23-25. The third set we went down 13- 25 but the Lady Cowboys found fire and focus and answered back strongly, taking the fourth set with a score of 25-16.

It all came down to the quick fifth set. Emotions were high and Kanab started strong and just kept pushing the score. Only giving up six points to the Rams and ending with a score of 15-6. It was such a fun win. Coaches are so proud of the girls’ teamwork and persistence. They never gave up and worked together to get the big win over the South Sevier Rams.

As a team Kanab pushed some great serves. Haylie McQuivey was 100 percent with 21/21 and one Ace, Ashlyn Houston 19/21 with two aces, Livi Bundy 17/18 with two aces and Anna Cutler was 10 percent with 10/10. Madi Orton, Bundy, Savannah Bateman and Houston led with kills. Hadley Barnson had three big blocks and defensively Emilie Gilberg, London Fenus and McQuivey got things done for their team to run some great offense. Cutler had 29 assists. The atmosphere was fun, and we are proud of our girls!

On Thursday Kanab traveled again, this time up to Panguitch. Panguitch has had a great program for over a decade and is currently ranked number one in the state in 1A rankings. We met up with them in a tournament earlier in the year and got the win, so we knew they would be ready and wanting to take us down. The first set was a showing of what kind of night it was going to be. The first set score ended at 30-28 for the Bobcats. There was a great crowd of fans cheering our girls and team on along with a full house from the home team.

The second game was won by Kanab again with just a two-point difference 25- 23. The third set would go to Panguitch 25-20 and the fourth set back to Kanab again 25-20. It all came down to the fifth and final set. Most of the game was point for point. McQuivey, Houston and Fenus all pushed great points. McQuivey got us on a good serving run of six and seven points in the fourth and fifth set which is hard to do against such a good team. Their team backed them up with some great defense. Fenus, Emilie Gilberg, Cutler and McQuivey along with other teammates had some amazing defensive saves.

Houston finished the game with the two final serves of the game - her last one hitting the top of the net and dropping on Panguitch side for the ace, and more importantly a team win of 18-16. It was a great win for the Lady Cowboys Volleyball team. Team leaders were McQuivey 25/26 three aces, Houston 18/21 with one ace and Fenus 17/19 with three aces. Cutler had 37 assists for the night. Bateman brought her powerful swing to get 16 kills, Orton was right behind her with 12 and Bundy with eight.

The JV team had to jump back on the bus Friday morning to head up to a two-day tournament in Richfield. They were pretty beat from travel and close five-set games. The girls ended up placing fourth in the Silver Bracket.

Next week is homecoming week here in K-town. The Enterprise wolves will come to Kanab on Tuesday, and our teams will travel the long road to San Juan on Thursday. We hope you can come out and support our home game! There is also the option to watch Thursday’s game on live stream off of the high school website.
