Injured hiker prompted Angels Landing closure
Zion National Park officials have provided additional details about a search and rescue operation that temporarily closed Angels Landing on Saturday, September 19.
The park announced Saturday that the popular trail was closed while a search and rescue operation was underway but initially released few details about the incident. Officials said the trail would reopen when Zion dispatch determined it was safe to do so.
Park officials said Tuesday, September 22, that rescuers were responding to an injured hiker on the Angels Landing trail. The injury was described as non-life-threatening.
Members of the Zion Search and Rescue Team located the hiker, provided medical care and escorted the visitor safely down the trail. Rangers kept other hikers from entering the area while the rescue was underway, allowing emergency crews to work along the steep and narrow route.
Angels Landing subsequently reopened to visitors, with the park reporting normal trail operations following the rescue.
The park has not released the hiker’s identity or additional information about the injury.
The half-mile section of trail from Scout Lookout to Angels Landing includes narrow passages, steep drop-offs and sections equipped with chains. A permit is required to hike beyond Scout Lookout.
