At 9:46 a.m. on September 10, I received a text from my sister, Susana Young: “Are you outside? Look up at the K-Hill! We’re looking down at you from the Indian Dance Hall!” Her team of five hikers were waving enthusiastically. For so many years, Susan and Dave Baird have been taking annual trips up the hill. They like to hike and like to take novices up to the Dance Hall.

The eldest hiker on that day was 84, and the youngest was their three-year-old small dog Beezer. First timers on the trail this time around were Colin and Tess Geddes, the founders of the Grand-to-Grand Ultra race, with Charlotte Davis taking her second trip. All were willing and able to ensure that Susana, who missed doing this hike last year due to medical problems, could make it to the top, no matter how slowly they needed to go.
Susana and Dave have always said that no matter what shape you’re in, “We can get you to the top.” They love to help people explore around Kanab, and the K-Hill is no exception. There is no defined trail, so it helps to have a guide, especially if you need a boost. If you want to reach the Indian Dance Hall, be prepared with determination, hiking shoes and a bottle of water.
This exhilarating view from “On Top of the World” is just what the doctor ordered, considering the affairs of the world these days, so take a hike and dance a bit.
