First ACL reconstruction surgery completed at Kane County Hospital a major success

Kane County Hospital is excited to announce that the completion of an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction with autograft (tissue from the patient’s own body) surgery was a recent success. Dr. Hewitt, our new Orthopedic Sports Medicine surgeon, with the help of our surgical staff, was able to do this surgery on Preston Brown, locally, without he and his family having to travel out of town. Preston is a local High School student and is looking forward to participating in track this year and football next year.

ACL injuries, often prevalent among athletes participating in sports involving sudden direction changes and intense movements, can be devastating. These injuries can lead to pain, instability, and diminished mobility.

This surgery, crucial for maintaining stability and movement in the knee joint, has witnessed remarkable improvements that promise quicker recovery times and enhanced outcomes. Surgeons employ minimally invasive arthroscopic methods, using small incisions and a camera to guide them, reducing scarring, pain, and recovery time. Surgeons now customize treatment plans to the individual athlete, factoring in their age, activity level, and the specific demands of their sport. This personalized approach enhances the likelihood of a successful recovery and optimal post surgery performance.

Dr. Hewitt is personally familiar with this surgery as he tore his ACL while participating in sports. Dr. Hewitt has stated, “my interest in orthopedics began as a teenager after a significant knee injury. A reconstructive surgery and prolonged rehabilitation introduced me to the healing capability of medicine. I have not forgotten the moment I received the devastating diagnosis or the wonderful team that returned me to sport.” He understands the importance of getting back to activities that you love and that taking care of patients is an honor and a privilege.

Dr. Hewitt, the surgical team, and Kane County Hospital enjoyed the opportunity to provide this surgery for Preston. We look forward to other opportunities to help patients stay in town for their surgical needs. Dr. Hewitt is currently seeing patients through our clinic, KCH Specialty Group.
