Mildred Fay Black

December 11, 1937 – March 6, 2025

Mildred Fay Black, 87, passed away Thursday, March 6, at her home in Kanab, Utah, doing what she loved best; feeding the birds.

She was the first born of David and Amy Wagstaff of Hilliard, Wyoming. She graduated from Evanston High School in 1956. She worked at the Lincoln Service Station in Evanston.

She married Devon Black in the Salt Lake Temple on September 14, 1959. She then got to fulfill her dream and moved to Alaska, where she lived for 40 years in Fairbanks and Homer. In Fairbanks she owned a ceramics shop, and in Homer she worked as a CPA doing income tax.

In Alaska, she and Devon raised Husky dogs, and had a dogsled team. Her talents included sewing and knitting. She knitted numerous Christmas stockings and quilts for her family. She loved reading, quilting, and genealogy. She was also an avid bird watcher.

She was preceded in death by her parents David and Amy Wagstaff; husband Devon Black; in-laws Tom and LaVel Black; sisters Virginia, Linda, Bertha; brothers Ray and Tommy; brothers-in-law Cecil Hoffman, Dee Allison and Gerri Wagstaff.

She is survived by David (Loretta) Wagstaff, St. George, Utah; Marvin (Annie) Wagstaff, St. George, Utah; Peggy Hutchinson, Gillette, Wyo.; Terry Allison, Coalville, Utah; Jeanette Wagstaff, Roy Wagstaff and Larry (Sue) Wagstaff, all from Evanston, Wyo.

Her favorite saying was, β€œI don’t know why I was put on the earth, but I do know it was not to be a mother or a judge.”

A special thanks goes out to the Little Family and her friend Rick Pierson. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 11 a.m., in the Hoytsville 2nd Ward building, 1095 South Hoytsville Road, Hoytsville, Utah. Viewings will be held at that building on Friday from 6-8 p.m., and Saturday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Coalville Cemetery.
