The Planning and Construction park sub-committee for the Fredonia Park Renovation Project met last week to discuss the endless possibilities before them.

After measuring the entire park, they brainstormed their ideal park. Of course, a large play set with slides and climbers would be a must, but a toddler area for the younger kids would also be a great addition. A youth fitness trail to help encourage healthy activity could meander around the play areas. Around the perimeter of the park, a fitness trail with different stations for grown-ups and older kids to enjoy. The committee discussed the possibility of a water play area as well.

They determined the two swing sets could be repaired and painted to save money, as could the toddler climber. The other equipment, however, may be auctioned off or sold as scrap to help pay for the new equipment, their fate to be determined by the Fredonia Park Renovation Committee at a later date.

They agreed that future uses must also be taken into consideration when planning the renovations, such as possible pool and community center needs.

After brainstorming the “ideal” park, the committee discussed the bottom line. With the $15,000 grant from KaBoom!, the $1,000 from Reader’s Digest and the more than $7,000 raised by the Parks and Recreation Committee, they indicated they were off to a good start.

They also reviewed the possibility of the money previously earmarked for a “Kanab Creek Trail” (later deemed unsafe), being used for the fitness trails. The Fredonia Town Office staff has a meeting scheduled with Coconino County to discuss the legalities of this.

The next sub-committee meeting will be scheduled next week to discuss the outcome of the meeting with Coconino County.
