The public is invited to a free event on October 8 to learn about John Wesley Powell’s Second Expedition, which was centered in Kanab. James Aton has written a book about Powell and will make the presentation at the Kanab Middle School.

The presentation is part of the Writers of the Purple Sage historic writing retreat, which will be held the following day. In addition to the John Wesley Powell presentation, historic authors will be selling and signing books.

This is a great opportunity to learn more of our history. Ten authors are expected to have tables, including keynote speakers Will Bagley (Blood of the Prophets and many other books) and Jana Richman (The Last Cowgirl). Both the Utah Historical Society and the Utah Arts Council will be represented. The book signings and associated reception begin at 6 p.m. followed by the Powell presentation at 7 p.m.

There will be an exhibit of art relating to John Wesley Powell on display at the Kane County Hospital beginning on October 6 until November 4. There are also about 20 slots still available for the Writers of the Purple Sage beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Kanab Middle School on October 9. The cost is $15 for the retreat and seats are available on a first come, first serve basis.

The reception, book signings and talk are sponsored by the Friends of the Kanab City Library, Canyon Book and Supply, and Willow Canyon Outdoor Gear, Books and Espresso.
