The Kanab Cowboys are getting into their playoff groove, with three big wins last week.

On Tuesday, Kanab pounded Millard 18-2, with every one of the starters getting at least one hit. Payton Jesus went the distance on the mound and picked up the win, allowing only two hits.

On Wednesday, the Cowboys came from behind to beat a very good Virgin Valley squad at home 11-10. Kanab was down 6-0 early in the game. The home team chipped away, finally tying the game at 8-8 in the fifth inning. The Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the sixth to retake the lead 10-8. Kanab was held scoreless in the sixth, but rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 11-10. Tyrel Reidhead, Jordan Jones and Justin Orton each had big hits in the inning. Kade Quarnberg scored the winning run on a passed ball.

Craig Brinkerhoff slammed two home runs to lead all hitters. Dustin Reidhead came on in relief of Brinkerhoff and got the “W” with five strong innings of pitching.

On Friday, in the biggest game of the week against second place Beaver, hurler Justin Orton was one out away from a shutout when a Beaver batter dribbled a base hit. The next hitter clubbed a home run. Orton had seven strikeouts in the 5-2 victory. Craig Brinkerhoff once again led the offense, with another towering home run.

With the win, Kanab tied Beaver for second place with a 5-3 region record. The Cowboys are 11-4 overall.

This week, Kanab hosts Moapa Valley on Tuesday and then travels to South Summit for the state play-in games on Saturday. The Cowboys face North Sevier at 1 p.m., while South Summit plays Millard. The winners face off at 4 p.m. with the 2A State Tournament the following weekend.
