UHP Trooper Nic Berrie made a stop on North Highway 89 at the northwest end of Kanab on Sunday, March 1, 2009. He observed a 2009 Chevrolet Impala that failed to stay in its own lane of travel. The vehicle was stopped at milepost 65, in front of the Victorian Inn. It was a rental car that was traveling northbound. The driver of the car, Derek Harrington, was the only occupant in the vehicle. Berrie noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the car when he questioned Harrington, who gave him a suspicious sounding story. A search of the trunk revealed two large black duffle bags. Each bag contained a large bale of compressed marijuana, weighing approximately 25 pounds each. One bag also had a ziplock bag of marijuana in it. The total weight of the marijuana was 51.7 pounds, with an estimated street value of $180,000. The load of drugs was coming from Tucson, Arizona, destined for the Wasatch Front.
