Fredonia boys lose in double OT
On Wednesday, January 26, the Fredonia boys basketball team played the Seligman Antelopes. The game was exciting throughout. In the first quarter, the Antelope surged to a 14-10 lead, but the Lynx fought back to within two points by halftime. Seligman again went ahead in the third, outscoring the Lynx 8-5. However, the Lynx refused to quit. They clawed their way back to a 41-41 tie at the end of regulation.
Fredonia had a couple of chances to put the game away in the first overtime, but the Antelopes tied the game up again, forcing a second overtime. The Lynx worked hard but missed a couple of lay-ups and free throws that ultimately cost them the game. Seligman pulled out the victory 57-52.
Seniors Waylon Robinson and Dillon Johnson stepped up their offense, scoring 16 and nine points respectively, while Austen Utter also netted nine points. Brad Wero had a great game, forcing several turnovers, playing good defense, and scoring all of the Lynx points in the third period. Caleb Barlow added three blocked shots for the Lynx, giving them an extra dimension.
Fredonia vs. Ash Fork
The Lynx started strong in their next game against Ash Fork, keeping the game close at the end of the first quarter. Unfortunately, Fredonia only scored two points in the entire second period, while Ash Fork scored 27. Fredonia played fairly evenly after that, but could never make up for the lost period.
Dillon Johnson led the scoring with 14 points, while Waylon Robinson netted 12.
Fredonia vs. Grand Canyon
Fredonia then played Grand Canyon. The Lynx decided to take the first quarter off and trailed the Phantoms 10-2. They only did marginally better in the second, allowing Grand Canyon to build a 27-12 lead by the half.
After a halftime pep talk, the Lynx came out ready to play ball. They scored 13 points in the third, while holding the Phantoms to just four points. The score was 31-24 going into the fourth quarter.
The Lynx managed to cut the Phantoms’ lead down to two points, but could never manage to gain the lead. They eventually lost 41-34 after a valiant effort. This will put them in fourth place going into the region tournament.
Waylon Robinson led Fredonia’s scoring with 14 points, followed by Dillon Johnson with seven, while Austen Utter, Brad Wero and TJ Goodnow each contributed four.
