Garrett Spencer, a fourth-grader at Valley Elementary School, placed second in the eight and nine year-old division at the Elks District Hoop Shoot in Monroe, Utah.

Spencer began his run to the district tournament by placing first in the local hoop shoot in Orderville. He advanced by making 19 of 25 free throws.

By winning the local tournament, Spencer advanced to compete in St. George in the Dixie Regional Elks Hoop Shoot. Spencer shot well from the line to make 20 out of 25 free throws. This tied him for first with another competitor. In the shoot-out, Spencer drained four out of five, while the other competitor made only three. This gave him the first place trophy and advanced him to the District Hoop Shoot in Monroe.

At the District tournament, Spencer struggled a little. He was only able to convert on 15 of the 25, but was only one shot behind the leader. Another competitor made 15 shots, causing the two to have a shoot-out for second place. Spencer made four of five, while the other person only made one, to give Spencer the second place trophy. The first place shooter advanced to the State Hoop Shoot in Provo, Utah.

“I wasn’t mad that I took second, but I was mad that I didn’t shoot as well as I had been,” said Spencer of his performance.

Congrats Garrett on this excellent achievement. Good luck in the future!
