Kanab golf team heads to State Tourney
The 2020 Kanab High Golf season will be coming to a close next Wednesday and Thursday, September 30 and October 1, at the State Golf Tournament at Talons Cove in Saratoga Springs on the shores of Utah Lake.
The season began with an opening tournament on August 5 in St.George at the Southgate Golf Course. The Cowboys were led by freshman Ryan East, who shot a team low score of 93. Following Ryan were fellow freshmen Maddix Baird with 97 and Griffin Bone 98, with junior Ashton Grymes adding a 98, senior Landon Adams 99 and senior Mason Blake 109.
The next week we played in Hurricane at Sky Mountain Golf Course. The Cowboys were led by Ashton Grymes with 95, while Maddix Baird and Griffin Bone carded 99, followed by junior Shayden Troy with 100, Ryan East 110 and juniors John Riordan and Cole Beazer coming in with 112 and 116.
The Cowboys then marched forward to Fillmore where we played at the Paradise Golf Course. Freshman Maddix Baird scored a team best 91, with Ashton Grymes and Landon Adams both shooting 97. Griffin Bone rounding out the top four scores with 99. John Riordan shot his season best of 104 at Paradise GC.
Next the Cowboys headed to Beaver to play the Canyon Breeze Golf Course where Landon Adams and Shayden Troy led the Cowboys, both shooting 91, followed by Maddix Baird 93 and Ashton Grymes with 96 to round out the top four for Kanab.
The Cowboys next match was in St. George again, this time at Coral Canyon Golf Course, where temperatures got up around 107 degrees. The Cowboys stayed hydrated and were led by our first scores in the 80’s, with Maddix Baird carding 88 and Griffin Bone 89, followed by Ryan East 92. Rounding out the top four was Shayden Troy with a 94.
The next match was at Palisades State Park Golf Course just north of Gunnison. The extreme temperature drop was felt by the 40 degree rain/snow mix. The match was eventually called after nine holes of play. The scores were all thrown out, but the Cowboys welcomed three newcomers to tournament action with sophomores Trent Orton and Jordan Cornell and freshman Cooper Troy getting their first taste of tournament play.
The regular season was rounded out with the region tournament in Richfield at Cove View Golf Course last week. The Cowboys were led at region by Maddix Baird and Griffin Bone with 89, and Ryan East and Ashton Grymes with 94. The Cowboys finished second in the region behind Beaver.
The Cowboys had three golfers finish in the region top 12, with Maddix Baird (8) and Griffin Bone (9)and Ashton Grymes (12), with Landon Adams finishing just outside of the top 12 in the 13th spot.
The full Kanab Cowboy golf team consisted of seniors Landon Adams, Mason Blake and Micheal McDonald; juniors Shayden Troy, Ashton Grymes, Cole Beazer and John Riordan; sophomores Trent Orton, Samuel Ray and Jordan Cornell; and freshmen Joe Riordan, Cooper Troy, Ryan East, Maddix Baird and Griffin Bone.
We will be represented at State with our top six golfers in scoring average – Maddix Baird team best 91.8, Griffin Bone 94.6, Ashton Grymes 95.4, Landon Adams 95.7, Shayden Troy 97.2 and Ryan East 99.2.
