Busy week for KHS Volleyball
The Lady Cowboys played eight games last week for what was the busiest week of the season.
On Tuesday night, Kanab hosted the Bulldogs from Gunnison. Kanab jumped on Gunnison early and won the first set 25-22. In the second set Kanab trailed 17-10, but some great defense led by an outstanding diving play from sophomore defensive specialist London Fenus helped turn the tide and ignited the Kanab rally to take the set 25-22. Gunnison flipped the script in the third set, winning 25-22. Kanab was determined to put this one away and dominated the fourth set from start to finish, running away with it 25-13, taking the match, 3-1.
Chloe Collins led the way for the Kanab attack with seven kills and hitting .462 for the game! Haylie Hatch hit .367, adding 14 kills, while Maddie Orton contributed another 12 kills to the stat line. Kanab hit .322 as a team for the evening. Grayce Glover had another strong night serving with seven aces and 47 assists to get the offense in rhythm.
On Thursday night, Kanab welcomed the 3A San Juan Broncos to town in what was one of the most exciting games Kanab Volleyball has had in years. Kanab dropped the first two sets in heartbreaking fashion, 24-26 and 25-27. It is extremely difficult to win a match when down two sets in volleyball. The team showed a lot of grit to get back in the game and just barely took the third set 25-23. With the momentum swinging toward the home team and the rowdy crowd fully engaged, the Cowboys slammed the Broncos 25-10 in the fourth set and continued that all the way through the fifth set, winning 15-7, to take the game 3-2. The student body ran to center court and celebrated the awesome come-from-behind victory with the players.
Kanab’s serving was strong with 21 aces in the game and kept the Broncos off balance all night. Marley Daley passed the ball extremely well and led the defense by passing at a 2.16 rate. Kanab hit .303 as a team and were led by Abbey Bateman, who was unstoppable in the middle, leading the team with 18 kills and hitting a .467! Kanab swept both Tuesday and Thursday night by winning freshmen, JV, and varsity to go 6-0.
Friday and Saturday, Kanab traveled to the Dixie Tournament in St. George for six more games. It was an up and down tournament for the girls, who finished the weekend 3-3. Kanab beat South Sevier 3-2, North Sevier 3-2, and then played San Juan again and beat them 3-2 in another extremely tight game that saw the final set finish with the Cowboys on top 16-14. The three losses came against Tooele 3-0, Hurricane 3-2, and Valley 3-1.
Libero Marley Daley led the serving with 10 aces and just three errors for the tournament and was the passing leader at a 1.85. The Cowboy attack was led by Haylie Hatch with 77 kills, while Abbey Bateman nailed 51, and Madison Orton contributed 36. Grayce Glover also had over 200 assists for the tournament in what has been a strong start to her junior season.
Grayce has also achieved something never before done in the Kanab volleyball program by being awarded the MaxPreps Player of the Week for the entire state of Utah, including all players from 1A-6A! This is such an exciting award for her to be recognized as the top player this week in the whole state. She currently leads the state on all levels with 320 assists and is second in aces at 33.
The Lady Cowboys have a much lighter schedule this week with only one game Thursday night when they host the Panguitch Bobcats starting with the freshmen at 4:30, JV at 5:30, and varsity at 7 p.m.
