The Southern Utah News received word that they have received 22 awards in the 2019 Utah Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.

With the annual UPA convention canceled in March, the awards were mailed to each member newspaper.

In the Group 1 Category (those newspapers with subscriptions under 3000), the SUN received five first place plaques, 10 second place certificates and seven third place awards.

The first place awards were for Best News Coverage (Best Overall Coverage of Three Random Newpapers), Best Photo Page (Balloons & Tunes, photos by Ken Koontz and layout by Dennis Brunner), Best Government Story (Kanab City Council Approves Sale of Water by Joan Thacher), and Best Display Ad (Sighthound Shivoo).

The SUN also received the Best Reporting on a Public Notice. (All UPA newspapers competed for this award, regardless of size). This award was regarding Southern Red Sands legal notice to lease water from Kanab City and the Kane County Water Conservancy District and the subsequent articles following up on the issue.

The second place awards were for Best Sports Story (Kanab Lady Cowboys come up two points short in title game by Dennis Brunner), Best Education Story (Safe Schools, Priority One by Dixie Brunner), Best Business Story (Southern Red Sands Project by Dixie Brunner), Best Editorial (Every Once in a While, Listen to the People by Dixie Brunner), Best Sports Column (Talkin’ Sports by Dennis Brunner), Best Sports Photograph (Cowboy Football TD by Angie Reidhead), Best Feature Photograph (Balloons & Tunes by Ken Koontz), Best Infographic (Freedom of the Press), Best Lifestyle Page, and Best Community Event (Balloons & Tunes).

The third place awards were for Best News Photograph (Pioneer Day Fireworks over Jackson Flat Reservoir by Barry Glazier), Best Sports Page, Best Advertising Idea (Pigskin Predictions Football Contest), Best Circulation Promotion (Best Darn Little Paper in Utah), Best In-House Self Promotion (Southern Utah Vacation Guide Photo Contest), Best Website ( and Best Special Section (Southern Utah Vacation Guide).
