Kanab High School graduate Paul Kabonic was recently named the 4A Basketball Coach of the Year in the state of Wyoming.

Kabonic coaches the Star Valley Braves of Afton, Wyoming. The team finished with a 16-7 record, including going undefeated at home (10-0). Kabonic’s team finished the season with an 11 game winning streak, and were headed to the 4A state championship game when the coronavirus arrived and the game was cancelled.

The Braves won the first game of the West Regional Tournament over Riverton 58-23. Then they edged Rock Springs 42-40 to advance to the semifinal game against Kelly Walsh of Casper, Wyoming. On March 7, Star Valley won a thrilling overtime game over Kelly Walsh, 48-43, to advance to the 4A championship game.

In the title contest the Braves were going to face East regional winner, Thunder Basin High School of Gillette, Wyoming. Star Valley has 750 students in their school, while most of the other 4A schools are much larger, some having as many as 1900 students.

The Braves won the 3A state title in football last fall. Kabonic was the defensive coordinator for that team.

Congratulations to Paul on a great season. He is the son of former Kanabites Jim and Betty Kabonic, who now reside in Hatch, Utah.
