The Kanab Cowboys hosted the Dixie High School JV squad last Thursday evening. Dixie, a 4-A school should have sent a few of their varsity players as the local boys whipped them pretty good. The game was over in the first eight minutes as the Cowboys scored four touchdowns to lead 28-0

Coach Bucky Orton told his players after the game to focus right now on North Sevier, their next opponent. He said the Wolves were the reason Kanab did not have another championship banner hanging in the gym. North Sevier defeated the Cowboys in the 1-A title game last fall, so the local boys should have no problem getting up for the next game.

Kanab scored on their first possession when a short punt found the Cowboys on the Dixie 41 yard line. It only took them four plays to find the end zone, with fullback Dustin Reidhead going the final six yards for the score. A Cody Barber extra point kick made it 7-0 with 9:33 left in the first period. A 13-yard sweep by Jordan Jones and a 17-yard scamper by QB Craig Brinkerhoff were the big plays in the drive.

After another three and out Dixie punted from their own 18-yard line. Justin Orton returned the booming punt 62 yards for a touchdown, only to have the play called back on a holding penalty. It didn’t matter as the Cowboys drove 64 yards on nine plays with Orton getting a second chance, scoring on a 10 yard run to make it 14-0. Three big running plays set up the touchdown, an 11 yard dash by Brinkerhoff, a 22 yard gallop by Reidhead and an 11 run counter by Orton.

Dixie fumbled on their third play on their next possession, giving Kanab the ball on the Flyers 36 yard line. After an incomplete pass, Brinkerhoff hooked up with tight end Rhees Jackson for a 12-yard gain. Reidhead broke through the line on the next play and went the distance, scoring a TD from 24 yards out to make it 21-0 with 4:03 still to play in the first quarter.

On Dixie’s first play after the following kickoff, Brinkerhoff picked off a pass that was tipped high into the air. He broke free from the congestion and streaked down the sideline for a 50-yard touchdown return. The score with 3:42 still on the clock was now 28-0.

The only score of the second period was a 25-yard strike from back-up quarterback Kade Quarnberg to Orton with 1:18 left in the first half. Reidhead scored the final touchdown of the game on a four yard plunge with 6:08 remaining in the third quarter to make it 41-0.

The closest Dixie made it to the goal line was late in the third when they made it to the Kanab four-yard line. A fumble on the first play lost four yards. Dason Ott stuffed the Dixie runner for no gain on second down and Reidhead made a tackle for a three-yard loss on third down. The Cowboys took over on downs when a fourth down pass fell incomplete.

A lot of second and third string players saw action in the second half, including third string QB and defensive back Brandon Jenson, who went high for an interception in the fourth quarter.

Although Coach Orton was hoping for a little more competition, he was pleased with his players’ performance.
