Lady Cowboys have a busy week
The Lady Cowboys hosted the Parowan Rams on Thursday for a Region 18 match up. Kanab came away with a clean sweep with Freshmen, JV and Varsity all winning their matches 3-0! The Varsity won their three sets 25-18, 25-12, 25-13.
Senior captain Baylee Ramsay led the way, serving at 97 percent with eight aces. Ramsay also led the attack with 22 kills. She was followed by the other outside hitter junior Haylie Hatch with 14, and middle blocker sophomore Abbey Bateman with 13. Kanab led from start to finish in each set and the match was never really in doubt.
After defeating the Rams Thursday night, the Lady Cowboys had a quick turnaround, playing in the Monument Valley Tournament in Kayenta, Arizona all day Friday and Saturday. Kanab played 10 games over the two days and finished in fourth place. Kanab finished with a record of 7-3 for the weekend.
The girls came away with wins against Winslow, Pinon (twice), Hopi, Shiprock, Window Rock and Page. The three losses came against excellent teams from larger 3A schools in Arizona, including Snowflake, Monument Valley and champion Tuba City.
Junior hitter Taylor White had a great weekend by putting pressure on the competition with her serving. She led the Cowboys with 20 aces, followed by Ramsay’s 16. Senior middle blocker Macie Stewart and sophomore setter Grayce Glover both served at a solid 91 percent for the 10 games. Hatch led the offensive attack by hitting .300 with 56 kills, followed by Ramsay with .260 and 75 kills.
It was a successful week for the Lady Cowboys, whose current record sits at 15-8. In Region 18, Kanab is tied for second with a 2-1 record and is currently ranked fourth in the state, which is what matters most with the UHSAA transitioning to the RPI system for all sports this season.
This Tuesday, Kanab travels to Enterprise to take on a Region 18 rival. They finished second at state in 2018, and are currently ranked third in the state.
OnThursday it’s another tough match-up with the short trip to take on the Valley Buffaloes in a non-region game.
