Outdoor enthusiasts are reminded that comments for any proposed changes to the number of people allowed daily to the local hiking mecca, “The Wave,” are due by June 21, 2019.

Three public scoping meetings were held last week – in Kanab, Page and St. George – where questions were answered and information handed out by BLM personnel to those interested.

Currently, only 20 permits are offered daily, with 10 drawn online four months in advance, and 10 drawn the day before your hike. The BLM is proposing to expand the number to 96 daily, or somewhere in between (why your comments are important.)

Kane County Office of Tourism Director Camille Johnson Taylor asks those filling out comments to include two things:

1) Any additional permits, if they are increased in number, are done so at the live walk-in lottery in Kanab.

2) Any online winners would be required to pick up their permits in Kanab and attend a safety orientation.

Taylor adds that the live, walk-in lottery is hugely impactful to Kanab and Kane County’s economy.

You can still e-mail your comments to blm_az_vcnm_pcvc_com ments@blm.gov.
