A public scoping meeting was held in Kanab March 28 to take comments on land use planning for the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. In addition to the meeting in Kanab, scoping meetings were also held in Bluff, Blanding and Escalante.

The purpose of the meetings was to gather public input on land use management in light of the recent and dramatic reduction of monument size by President Donald Trump. The scoping meeting was set up as an open house forum with different stations manned by BLM and monument staff. The public was encouraged to ask questions concerning the resources.

“These informational open houses give the public access to the resource officers,” said State BLM Communications Director Michael Richardson. When asked how long the process will take, he said that it’s difficult to say due to how much public comment they receive. “We want to accomplish it as quickly as possible, but the comments must be addressed and analyzed.”

The public can comment in a number of ways, with the scoping period ending April 13, 2018. At the open houses they had a verbal comment station where the attendee could dictate oral comments directly to a court reporter for transcription.
