Former football coach Mont Griffiths, of Fredonia, has had an exhilarating month of August this year. Not only did he celebrate his 80th birthday, he received some great news from one of his former players, Carl Cluff.

Cluff was contacted by the Arizona Interscholastic School Association (AIA) that the 1967 Fredonia High School Arizona State Champion football team is being presented at the celebration of the 50th year of eight-man football. The winning score was 71-7 against Elfrida, a community near Douglas and the Mexican border.

The FHS team will be honored on November 10, 2017, at the 1A High School State Football Championship Game during half-time at Maricopa High School in Flagstaff, Arizona.

This event has started a long distance pep rally, connecting the 22 member vintage teammates who now reside throughout the U.S. and abroad. Of course, the cheerleaders and fans are included in the 50th year celebration! Hopefully, all the mid-60-year old teammates will survive the excitement!

Coach ‘Griff’ and team are gathering sizes for their T-shirts. Most everyone has been contacted, and so far only one player is unable to be there.

Families of the teammates will be admitted free of charge to the State Championship Game on November 10 at 6 p.m.
