The weather could not have been more perfect for this years Kanab 10K on Saturday, May 6. The starting line was not freezing and the clouds kept the heat at bay. The race began shortly after 7 a.m. and participants raced toward Kanab.

Coming in first place was 13-year-old Kanab local Nathan Bowman, with a time of 40:06. Eric Larson, 44, from St. George, clocked in at 40:08, giving him a second place finish, and Ernesto Escobar, 19, also from Kanab, finished third in the men’s division with a time of 42:58.

Erica Schramm, 39, from Las Vegas, Nev., finished first in the women’s division, with a finish of 40:52. She was followed by Casey Daley, 35, of Kanab, with a time of 49:12 and Rebecca Kennedy, 46, from Williams, Ariz., with a time of 49:21.

After the final participants crossed the finish line, everyone gathered under the pavilion for the awards ceremony and to enjoy a spread of fruit, muffins, and doughnut holes provided by Glazier’s Market.

In addition to unique sandstone trophies from Western Hills, Bowman and Shramm also received $100 off a pair of running shoes from St. George Running Center. The male and female second place overall finishers received a $50 gift certificate from St. George Running Center, and third place overall finishers received a $35 gift certificate from St. George Running Center. First place division winners also received $20 off a pair of running shoes from St. George Running Center and custom trophies were awarded three deep in each age division. All runners received a shirt designed by local artist, Mikelle Stott.

This year we had a Mother-Daughter and a Mother-Son team award for the fastest combined time of each team. The Mother-Daughter winners were Jazmine Slama and Linda Slama, with a combined time of 2:13:52. The Mother-Son winners were Rebecca Kennedy and Cooper Heap, with a combined time of 1:33:37. The teams won a river trip for two in Moab donated by Western River Expeditions.

Additionally, this event would never happen without the support of the law enforcement officers, Search and Rescue team, and EMT personnel. They do a phenomenal job in looking out for the safety and well-being of the participants. Every year they are on board with this event, and it means so much to have their unwavering support and help.
