Kanab Cowboy wrestlers return from state tournament
Kanab Cowboys had 11 wrestlers compete at the state tournament this past weekend at Utah Valley University. Kanab had their work cut out for them with a young team consisting of only two seniors. Despite some hard fought efforts, Kanab was only able to put two wrestlers on the podium.
Dylan Bistline and Kaden Jones, both sophomores, put forth great efforts making it into the 3rd consolation round however falling short, losing to Warren from Millard and Jed Lee from South Summit respectively. This stopped them from moving on to the medal rounds.
Allan Raddatz was back this year as a senior after placing 5th last year hoping to improve and move up on the podium. Raddatz was able to bring home 4th place for the Cowboys with wins over Dylan Kruger from North Summit(fall 2:24), Ruben Zarate from Delta (dec. 6-3) and an exciting sudden victory win over Beavers Brendon Hollingshead (SV1, 7-5).
Sophomore Cody Stubbs salvaged an injury plagued season coming off a fractured collar bone which kept him out of competition for five weeks, and more recently a fractured hand. Stubbs was able to march into the finals with wins over Paydon Simkins from Enterprise (fall 0:32), Korby Christiansen from Emery (fall 3:51), and Carson Whitney from Grand (fall 3:08). However, Stubbs came up short in the finals losing a 9-1 match to Van bray from Millard and ended placing 2nd.
Kanab Cowboys were also represented well by Senior Patrick Luo who made the academic all state team.
The team has had a great year resulting from hard work and dedication by all the wrestlers. Coach Blaine Wheeler and Brandon Stubbs couldn’t be prouder of this team. They feel there is lots of talent and potential for the next few years and expect great things from Kanab wrestling in the future.
Coach Wheeler, Coach Stubbs and the high school wrestling team will be running a little league wrestling program for kids kindergarten to 8th grade starting February 16. Sign up sheets with more details will be available at the elementary and middle school.
