Cowgirls tied with Beaver for first place
The Kanab Cowgirls lost their first region game of the year on Tuesday, Jan. 24, to Beaver, 38-30. Both teams finished the first half of the 10 game season with four wins and one loss.
Beaver led 10-6 after the first quarter of action. Both teams could only put in six points in the second stanza, and Beaver led 16-12 at the half. Beaver broke the game wide open in the third quarter, scoring 13 points, while the Cowgirls stayed cold, only managing four points, to trail 29-16 heading into the final period of play. Kanab finally got the offense going in the fourth quarter, outscoring the hosts, 14-9. But they dug too big of a hole, and lost by eight, 38-30.
KC Houston led the Cowgirls with 12 points, including three treys. Sidney McDonald netted six points, grabbed five rebounds and had four assists. Lacey Glover tallied five points and led the ‘Girls with eight boards. Kailee Jones also scored five.
The Kanab ‘Girls got back on track on Thursday, Jan. 26, with a home win over South Sevier, 48-42. Big second and third quarters propelled the Cowgirls to victory. After one period of action, Kanab led 9-8. A 14 point second stanza found Kanab ahead 23-17 at the break. A 16 point third frame and the Cowgirls had a commanding 39-26 lead with one quarter left in the game. South Sevier made a run, outscoring the hosts, 16-9, to cut the final score to six points, 48-42.
Katelyn Church led the well-balanced Cowgirls attack with 12 points. Sidney McDonald netted nine points, with five assists and four steals. Kailee Jones had a huge game, snagging 11 boards off the glass, while contributing eight points. Lacey Glover also scored eight points, and grabbed six boards. Jessie Glover added five points, with three rebounds.
This week, the Cowgirls play at Enterprise on Tuesday, then travel to Delta on Thursday.
