The Kanab Cowboys won their own tournament, the Cowboy Classic, last week. After coming from behind to beat Lincoln County, Nev. on Thursday, 56-36, they held off the Gunnison Bulldogs, 43-29, on Friday night for the championship.

Monte Glover was high scorer in both games, putting down 17 in the first contest, and 16 in the championship.

Kanab fell behind quickly in the opener on Thursday, as Lincoln County got off the bus hot and shot out to a 16-5 lead after one. Kanab weathered the storm, and took control in the second frame, outscoring the Nevada boys 17-3, to take a 22-19 lead into halftime. The third quarter was pretty even, and the Cowboys led 40-33 heading into the final period of action. Kanab buckled down once again, outscoring Lincoln County 16-3, to win going away 56-36. Layne Anderson netted 13 points, with Kade Jackson adding eight, Parker Collins seven and Jake Shakespear six.

In the championship game, Kanab held a slim one point lead after one, 12-11. The Cowboys extended their lead to 21-15 at the break. Kanab pushed their advantage to 10 points, 31-21, with one quarter left to play. A 12-8 scoring edge in the fourth period found Kanab winning 43-29. Jackson supported Glover’s 16 points with eight of his own, while Anderson added five.

This week, Kanab hosts El Capitan from Colorado City on Jan. 4 and Dixie High’s JV team on Friday. Next week, they host South Sevier on Jan. 11.
